Baltimore sues shale producers in price-fixing class action in US court The city of Baltimore has hit major U.S. shale oil producers including Hess and Permian Resources with a lawsuit alleging they conspired to curb production.

Reuters covered the firm’s work in Mayor and City Council of Baltimore v. Permian Resources Corp., our client’s antitrust class action against major U.S. shale oil producers. Baltimore alleges that Hess, Permian Resources, Chesapeake Energy, Occidental Petroleum, Diamondback Energy and Pioneer Natural Resources — now a subsidiary of Exxon Mobil — conspired beginning in 2017 to curb production and inflate the price of crude oil and light petroleum products. The city, which buys fuel for a variety of purposes, says it paid more than it should have for gasoline, diesel and heating oil, and seeks damages and an order barring further price coordination on behalf of a proposed class of thousands. It was the first suit by a state or municipality among more than a dozen consolidated in New Mexico federal court. The firm represents Baltimore as co-counsel.
