Yahoo will give millions to a settlement fund for Chinese dissidents A $5.4 million settlement over the mismanagement of the Yahoo Human Rights Fund concludes a lengthy legal fight.

MIT Technology Review covered the firm’s work in Depu v. Oath Holdings, our clients’ lawsuit over the mismanagement of the Yahoo Human Rights Fund. Yahoo created the $17.3 million fund after turning over Chinese users’ account information to state security, which led to their imprisonment. The suit alleged that the nonprofit Yahoo chose to run the fund spent less than 4% of it on the dissidents it was meant to help. The defendants agreed to pay $5.425 million, ending an eight-year fight. Six former political prisoners will receive payments, and at least $3 million will endow a new fund, managed by the nonprofit Humanitarian China, for people imprisoned in China for their speech. Times Wang represented the plaintiffs.
