Baltimore’s fight with Agora tests the limits of its new consumer protection powers Baltimore filed a lawsuit against Agora, alleging it gave predatory investment advice that targeted older adults.

The Baltimore Banner covered the firm’s work in Mayor and City Council of Baltimore v. The Agora Companies, LLC et al., our client’s consumer protection suit against the Baltimore-based publisher Agora and its affiliates, including MarketWise. The city alleges that this network of companies targets older adults with investment and health newsletters, locks them into recurring charges, and makes refunds hard to get. It seeks penalties, compensation for harmed customers, and an order bringing the companies into compliance with Baltimore’s consumer protection ordinance. The Banner spoke with a Baltimore small-business owner and her brother who found that their 82-year-old father, since diagnosed with dementia, had spent thousands on subscriptions from several Agora-linked publications, believing he was buying stocks rather than advice about them. The firm represents Baltimore as co-counsel.
