My Father’s Legacy: Fighting for Democracy in China with Times Wang Times Wang, human rights lawyer and the son of Chinese democracy pioneer, Dr. Wang Bingzhang, who has been imprisoned since 2002, addressed the 17th Annual Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy.

Times Wang addressed the 17th Annual Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy in February 2025, speaking about his father, Wang Bingzhang. His father gave up a medical career after studying in Canada to organize for Chinese democracy, founding the magazine China Spring and several pro-democracy groups. In 2002, he was lured to Vietnam, kidnapped, and sentenced to life in prison after what Times described as a sham trial, becoming the PRC’s longest-serving political prisoner. Times recounted receiving word that his father had died, flying to Guangdong to investigate, and finding him alive after 17 years in solitary confinement. On an earlier visit, his father’s first words through the glass were: “do not believe what the regime says about me.” Times said his father’s example led him to represent victims of human trafficking, forced labor, and political oppression.
